micromod’s nano- and microparticles possess tailor-made properties for every application in the Life Sciences

Magnetic nanoparticles for DNA/RNA separation

500 nm nanomag®-D particles with a plain dextran surface and 250 nm nanomag®-silica particles with a silica-fortified dextran surface possess optimal DNA/RNA binding properties and a high magnetomobilty for high-throughput DNA/RNA separation.

Magnetic polystyrene microparticles for cell separation

micromer®-M particles exhibit a high magnetomobility and are available with different diameters in the range of 2-12 µm with various functional groups on the surface like COOH, NH2 or epoxy. After conjugation of a cell-specific antibody micromer®-M particles can be applied for magnetic cell separation.

Magnetic nanoparticles as tool for magnetic field assisted hyperthermia

BNF particles provide high heating rates at high amplitudes of the magnetic field in the range of 60-100 kA/m at a frequency of 150 kHz. In contrast, perimag® particles possess optimal heating properties at low magnetic field strength, e.g. 4.0 kA/m and frequencies above 500 kHz.

Magnetic nanoparticles as tracer for Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI)

perimag® and synomag®-D particles exhibit excellent properties as tracers for Magnetic Particle Imaging. The amplitude A3 of the third harmonic in the magnetic particle spectrum is more than twice as high as that of Resovist®. Aminated perimag® and synomag®-D are suitable for tracking of stem cells without use of any transfection agents.

Magnetic nanoparticles as contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

nanomag®-D-spio, perimag® and BNF particles are suitable contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Especially, particles with a cross-linked dextran or starch surface and amino modification are an optimal platform for the conjugation of specific antibodies, peptides, oligonucleotides or other specific biomolecules for targeted MRI applications.

Magnetic Nanoparticles for stem cell tracking

nanomag®-D-spio, perimag® and BNF particles with a plain dextran or starch surface and a slightly negative zeta potential are incorporated in stem cells after coating with poly-D-lysine or poly-L-lysine (Technote 203). In contrast amino functionalized perimag® have a moderate posity zeta potential that leads to a direct stem cell uptake without use of any transfection agents. The magnetically labelled stem cells can be tracked by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) and in Raman life cell analysis.

Targeting applications with magnetic nanoparticles

Functionalized nanomag®-CLD-spio, perimag® and BNF particles with a cross-linked dextran or starch surface are an optimal platform for the conjugation of specific antibodies, peptides, oligonucleotides or other specific biomolecules for targeted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) or hyperthermia applications. Micromod offers the conjugation of target specific biomolecules with terminal NH2 or SH groups on the surface of these particle types according to our Technotes 201 and 202 on customer’s request.

Magnetic Nanoparticles in Biosensor and Lab-on-Chip applications

BNF particles are thermally blocked at room temperature. Immobilized particles exhibit a small remanent moment in the absence of an applied magnetic field. This is a basic requirement for the versatile use of 100 nm BNF particles in substrate-free AC susceptometry based or optomagnetic biosensors. The streptavidin coated BNF particles allow the binding of a high number of biotinylated oligonucleotides for highly sensitive bacteria or virus detection.
Streptavidin coated nanomag®-D and micromer®-M particles are well established tools for substrate-based magnetoresistive sensors.
